Is this a dental emergency?

If you are not sure, call us. It costs nothing to ask, and we would rather hear from you early.

Toothache that keeps you up

Pain that throbs, wakes you at night, or does not settle with over-the-counter painkillers.

A knocked-out tooth

An adult tooth knocked out cleanly. Time matters a great deal here, so call straight away.

Broken or chipped tooth

A tooth that cracked on something hard, or a sharp edge that is cutting your tongue or cheek.

Swelling or an abscess

A swollen gum, face, or jaw, or a bad taste that will not go away. Swelling needs looking at promptly.

Lost filling or crown

Not always urgent, but the tooth underneath is exposed and can be sensitive. Keep the piece if you have it.

Bleeding that will not stop

Bleeding after an extraction that keeps going after half an hour of firm pressure on gauze.

Some things need a hospital, not a dentist. If swelling is affecting your breathing or swallowing, if you have a high fever alongside dental pain, or if the injury involves more than your teeth, go to a hospital emergency room or call 911. We would rather you went there first and saw us afterwards.

What to do right now

General first aid while you are on your way to us. Call the clinic either way, so we know you are coming.

A tooth has been knocked out

Pick it up by the crown, the chewing part, and avoid touching the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or water without scrubbing. If you can, slot it back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If you cannot, keep it in a cup of milk. Then call us. Do not let it dry out.

A bad toothache

Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently either side of the tooth in case food is trapped. A cold compress on the outside of your cheek helps with swelling. Take painkillers as directed on the packet. Do not hold aspirin against the gum, it burns the tissue.

A broken or chipped tooth

Keep any pieces you can find and bring them with you. Rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress for swelling. If a sharp edge is catching your tongue, a piece of sugar-free gum pressed over it will do until you get here.

Bleeding after an extraction

Roll clean gauze into a pad, place it over the socket, and bite down firmly for a full twenty to thirty minutes without checking it. Checking early restarts the clock. If it is still bleeding heavily after that, call us.

How an urgent visit works

01

You call

Tell us what happened and where it hurts. A human answers, and we will tell you honestly when we can fit you in.

02

We find the problem

A focused look at what is bothering you, with an X-ray if we need to see below the surface.

03

We settle the pain

Getting you comfortable comes first. What the right treatment is depends on what we find, and we will explain the options.

04

Then the plan

Once you are comfortable we talk about what the tooth needs longer term, with the costs in writing before anything is booked.

When we are open

Monday 9:00am to 5:00pm
Tuesday 8:00am to 8:00pm
Wednesday 8:00am to 8:00pm
Thursday 8:00am to 7:00pm
Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm
Saturday 9:00am to 2:00pm
Sunday closed

We are not a 24-hour clinic. Outside these hours, if it cannot wait, go to a hospital emergency room.

Costs and insurance

  • We bill most major insurers directly, so you pay only your share
  • We are an enrolled Canadian Dental Care Plan provider
  • You get the cost in writing before treatment starts
  • No hidden fees, and no work done without talking to you first

What an urgent visit costs depends entirely on what is wrong, so we do not publish a price. Ask us and you will get a straight answer.

Common questions

Do you see emergency patients who are not already with the clinic?

Yes. You do not need to be an existing patient. Call us, tell us what is going on, and we will get you in as soon as we can.

How fast can you see me?

We keep room in the day for urgent problems, so often it is the same day. It depends on what has already been booked and how serious your problem is. We will tell you honestly when you call rather than promising something we cannot do.

Are you open on Sunday or overnight?

No. We are closed Sundays and we are not a 24-hour clinic. If something cannot wait until we open, go to a hospital emergency room.

Will you take the tooth out?

Only if that turns out to be the right answer, and only after we have talked it through with you. Plenty of painful teeth can be treated and kept. We look first, explain what we found, and you decide.

Do you take my insurance?

We bill most major Canadian insurers directly, and we are an enrolled CDCP provider. Bring your plan details or member number and we will check your coverage before treatment starts.

It has been years since I saw a dentist. Will I get a lecture?

No. We start from where you are and deal with what hurts. No judgment and no lectures, today or at any visit after it.
